UPDATE: Congratulations to Loren Roberts, winner of the Kylo Ren figure!

Recently, I attended a press day for Star Wars: The Force Awakens; in addition to the press panel at which 100+ bloggers and reporters asked questions of the cast, there were a lot of product demos, photo ops and swag to take home. But we’ll get to that.

My coverage of the press event is over at GeekDad, and my review of the movie is at “On the Scene with Mrs. Kathy King,” in case you want to pop over and check out those posts. Meanwhile, I’ll tell you about the rest of the press event…

Like pretty much everything to do with Episode VII, the press event was shrouded in secrecy and security. The initial invitation did not even mention where it would take place other than the very vague description that it would be “in Los Angeles.” Finally, two days prior to press day, we were notified that it would take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, but we were under strict instructions not to disclose that information on social media; we were also told not to check in on any sites or use any apps that include geolocation functions. They did not want a stampede of fanboys trying to find some way of sneaking in to mob the cast.

Once inside, there were lots of things to see. One wall was covered with shelves containing an astonishing variety of Star Wars branded products including shoes, clothes, statuettes, art prints, and pretty much anything else they could think of. Next to that was a silkscreen station where workers printed t-shirts for the attendees, with your choice of the Star Wars or Bad Robot logo or both. Across the aisle, Ample Hills Creamery gave away samples of their limited edition Star Wars ice cream in either the Light Side (marshmallow) or Dark Side (dark chocolate) flavor. Disney Infinity and Google Cardboard demonstrated the Star Wars versions of their products, while other parts of the room contained a photo area where R2-D2, C3PO and BB-8 posed with guests, a display of costumes from the film, and a lunch buffet.

The attendees received several items including rubber bracelets in either black or white (“Dark side or Light?” she asked. I replied “I hear the Dark side has cookies.” And there were indeed cookies. Score one for the Dark side.), t-shirts and Google Cardboard viewers. One item we got was a Kylo Ren figure for the Disney Infinity computer game. It’s a cool-looking figure of the new villain portrayed by Adam Driver, done in that cartoonish style the game uses.

Just one little problem. We don’t have Disney Infinity. With the children grown up, our XBox and Wii stand idle these days, collecting dust for months at a time, waiting for those rare occasions when Chris will have friends over and play some Assassin’s Creed or Halo or whatever it is the kids are into these days. I haven’t really played many games in the last 30 years, except for Angry Birds on my iPhone and a brief period several years ago in which I made Lara Croft die a lot. The likelihood of us dropping any cash on a new game is pretty slim.

Kylo-Ren-Disney-InfinityThis is, of course, good news for you. Kylo Ren needs a new home, and it could be at your house. If you want this nifty collectible/game piece to come live with you, just follow the instructions below to enter the contest.
