Bridge of Spies is a look back at a time of political fear and paranoia, and documents the impact it had on ordinary people in America, from children preparing for global nuclear war to acts of terror perpetrated against those seen as “helping the commies.” We’ve created a typical Mid-Century suburban dinner to accompany the film.

Remembering David Bowie
Good articles have been written about why it’s okay to grieve for someone you’ve never met, a favorite actor or singer, for example. It’s natural when music, or art of any kind, profoundly affects us, speaks to our souls, and it’s okay to grieve the artist who sparked those feelings. This week we’ve listened to David Bowie’s music online and on vinyl. Our son played “Moonage Daydream” at an open mic. Our youngest daughter posted a photo of herself from her graduation shoot.

Dinner and a DVD: Ant-Man
Ant-Man was a hugely popular entry in Marvel’s “Phase 2” series, adding more comedy to the mix, primarily in the brilliant casting of Paul Rudd as the hero and the hilarious Michael Pena as his buddy Luis. There’s a scene fairly early on where Luis shows his concern for his little band of criminal friends by preparing a meal for them.

Meatloaf with Bacon and Barbecue Sauce
I think a good meatloaf is not too dry, not too soft and most importantly, does not have bell peppers. I tried to make this in my slow cooker a while back, but the results were too soft, I couldn’t make a decent cold meatloaf sandwich with the leftovers. And cold meatloaf sandwich is surely one of life’s small pleasures.

Cherry Chocolate Granola
Our local community center gives away food donated by local supermarkets and I picked up a 3 pound bag of oats when I was there recently. The bag was faded, battered, and taped, but I was intrigued by the challenge, so when I got home, I searched for ways to use up 3 pounds of oats before they were truly unusable. I used those oats for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even as a facial product! First, I made Cherry Chocolate Granola.
